Originally, the theatre was located in the building of the National Theatre and was called the Lyric Opera and Ballet Theatre, in 1958 it moved to the building of the Academy of Arts of Albania. And 8 years later it moved to the new Palace of Culture of Tirana, which was built with the support of the USSR. The construction began in 1959 during the visit of Nikita Khrushchev to Tirana. The building was supposed to be a monument to the Albanian-Soviet friendship. After the break in the relations between Albania and USSR at the end of 1961, Albania completed construction on its own. The first ballet of the National Theater, became the ballet "Khalili and Hayriya" in 1963.
